Title: A Micro-Structure Based Understanding of Eye Mechanics

Abstract:

The eye is a remarkable complex organ. Although most people rarely think of the eye as a mechanical structure, forces and deformations play a central role in vision. Abnormal connective tissue architecture, and altered mechanical behavior of ocular tissues can compromise vision and lead to blindness. Unfortunately, for many eye conditions, the mechanisms underlying vision loss and the role of mechanics are still not completely understood, which complicates prevention and treatment. This is, in large part, due to the difficulty of assessing the structure and mechanics of ocular tissues. In the Laboratory of Ocular Biomechanics at the University of Pittsburgh, we work to develop tools to characterize the eye and its biomechanics. In this seminar I will highlight recent advances for the characterization of ocular connective tissue microarchitecture, and of the effects of intraocular and intracranial pressures.
